How

Different combinations of medications are used. The medications used for a medical abortion may cause bleeding that is significantly heavier than a period and there may be intense cramping.5 It may take up to 2-24 hours for the pregnancy to pass, but the bleeding or spotting can last up to two weeks. The embryo may be expelled at home. A follow-up appointment should be scheduled with the doctor 1-2 weeks
afterwards to confirm that the abortion is complete.6

Medications Used2

Mifeprex (Mifepristone) is usually taken first, at either the abortion clinic or at home. Next, Misoprostol (Cytotec) is typically taken 24-48 hours after the first medication. Mifepristone is taken orally and misoprostol can be taken in several different ways, including orally or vaginally. Mifepristone blocks
progesterone, which supports the progression of the pregnancy, and misoprostol expels the
pregnancy from the uterus.

FDA and the Online Abortion Pill

Both Mifepristone and Misoprostol have the highest safety warning category given by the FDA.6,7&8 Under FDA’s regulations for medical abortions, the certified healthcare providers need to be able to determine the accurate dating of the pregnancy and to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy.9 North Care Women’s Clinic believes that the best way to gather information about the pregnancy is through an ultrasound.10 North Care Women’s Clinic puts the clients’ safety first by providing services and information to enable them to make an educated decision regarding abortion.

Why It Is Important to See a Doctor After an Abortion

It is recommended to see a doctor 1-2 weeks after a medical abortion so that the provider can check for complications such as infection and excessive blood loss. Additionally, at this appointment, the doctor is likely to perform an ultrasound to confirm that the abortion is completed.2&6 If the abortion pill is dispensed from an online source, you may not be able to have an in-person follow-up appointment to have these things checked.
