Getting the news of an unplanned pregnancy can feel surreal. Sharing the news with your partner may feel overwhelming, but you may feel the pressure come off once you take this step.

Though you can’t control how your partner will respond, it’s important that your partner knows about your pregnancy. If you have concerns about your safety, don’t share the news alone, or do it from a distance if needed.

How To Share the News

When sharing the news of your unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to prepare yourself mentally and consider taking some practical steps for it to go smoother. Here are some tips:

  • Choose a day & time when you have your partner’s full attention, like a day your partner doesn’t work and has time to process it.
  • Find a neutral location where you both feel comfortable.
  • If you feel safe to do so, be open and honest about the situation and the details of your pregnancy (how far along you are and the pregnancy options you’re considering).
  • Give your partner room and time to react and process their emotions around the pregnancy.
  • Do your best not to take your partner’s response personally. As you know, emotions are high, and it’s best not to overthink their reaction right away.
  • Lastly, be sure to discuss your partner’s role in this pregnancy and how they can help during this time (if you desire this).

Your Safety is a Priority

Again, we want to be sure your safety is protected. If you feel afraid for your safety, you do not need to share the news. If your partner is abusive in any way, it’s important to protect yourself. If you are in a situation that you feel unsafe in and need immediate assistance, please dial 911.

Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for 24/7 assistance. You are not alone.
