Are you experiencing significant bleeding after taking abortion pills (known as medical abortion)? It’s important to seek medical attention if you’re alarmed by any side effects of medical abortion.
A clear sign that you’re bleeding too much is if you’re soaking two or more pads an hour for two hours in a row. Get the medical help you need with a local medical provider or emergency room as soon as possible if this is your situation after an abortion.
At North Care, we can offer more insight into abortion and the risks and side effects that could occur. Talk with us today if you have questions about this pregnancy option.
How Medical Abortion Works
With medical abortion (the abortion pill method), mifepristone is taken first. This drug works to block the hormone progesterone, thinning the lining of the uterus and preventing the embryo from growing and staying attached. It will end the pregnancy.
Secondly, misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone. This drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo through the vagina with abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.
How Much Bleeding is Too Much?
It’s not abnormal for some heavy bleeding to occur after taking misoprostol (the second drug) in a medical abortion. It can be similar to period-like bleeding for several days after your abortion. You may even experience light to moderate bleeding for a couple of weeks after the procedure.
Even a blood clot as large as a lemon is considered normal. However, any blood clots bigger than a lemon warrant an immediate call to a healthcare provider or a trip to the emergency room.
Additionally, heavy bleeding that is soaking two or more pads an hour for two hours in a row is especially concerning. Some other warning signs to be aware of include:
- Bad pain in the stomach area or pelvis
- Chills or body aches
- Fast heart rate
- A fever that lasts more than four hours or that starts in the days after you take misoprostol
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
