Abortion Pill Study Results

Approximately 63% of all abortions today use the abortion pill method. A recent study reviewing insurance data reveals that one in ten patients experience serious adverse effects after using this method.

At North Care Women’s Clinic, we believe you deserve as much information as possible about your pregnancy and the complications associated with the abortion pill if you’re considering using this method. We provide a no-cost options consultation to give you the information you need.

What is the Abortion Pill Method?

The abortion pill is also known as a medical, medication, or chemical abortion because it uses drugs to end a pregnancy. There are two drugs in the regimen.

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the pregnancy hormone progesterone. All pregnancies need progesterone to develop and survive. Without it, the lining of the uterus thins and the pregnancy can no longer stay implanted, so this terminates the pregnancy.

The FDA approves the use of mifepristone through 10 weeks of pregnancy only. Misoprostol, the second drug, causes bleeding and contractions to expel the pregnancy and tissue from the body.

What Did the Research Discover?

The Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) discovered the following:

  • 10.93% of women overall had serious adverse events following their use of the abortion pill method.
  • Hemorrhaging (excessive bleeding) was one-third of the complications.
  • Almost half of those with adverse events had to visit the ER due to abortion-related complications.
  • Almost a third of the women with adverse events required a repeat (surgical) abortion because the abortion pill method was unsuccessful.
  • The study found a 22x higher rate of serious complications than reported by the FDA and drug manufacturers.

Are There Ways to Minimize Complications?

Having an abortion is a serious medical decision, and like all medical procedures, it has risks. The only way to minimize the potential complications is to get as much information about your pregnancy as possible.

Pregnancy Confirmation

Your first step is to get a free and confidential pregnancy confirmation at our clinic. Confirmation includes pregnancy testing and an ultrasound.

A pregnancy test indicates the possibility of pregnancy, but an ultrasound confirms additional information you need. For instance:

  • An ultrasound detects if your pregnancy is viable (developing) or if you have miscarried. Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, you can get a positive pregnancy test days or weeks after a miscarriage.
  • An ultrasound determines how far along you are in your pregnancy. The FDA approves the use of the drugs for up to 10 weeks, but the further along you are, the less effective the drugs become.
  • Ultrasound also detects the pregnancy’s location. A pregnancy that is not located in your uterus is known as an ectopic pregnancy. These types of pregnancies are extremely dangerous, and you must see your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

STD Testing

Having an STD can complicate pregnancy. If you’re considering an abortion, you definitely want to get tested for an STD beforehand.

North Care provides free testing and treatment for certain STIs/STDs for both men and women.
