If you are facing an unexpected pregnancy, healthcare is one of the most important things you need. You may be wondering if Medicaid can help during this time of regular appointments, ultrasounds, and testing.

In Pennsylvania, pregnant women can apply for Medicaid and often qualify for special coverage that ensures access to necessary care.

North Care Women’s Clinic is here to help you navigate your next steps. We provide free pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and resources to guide you through your options. Medicaid and Pregnancy in Pennsylvania

Medicaid, called Medical Assistance (MA) in Pennsylvania, is a state and federally funded health coverage program for eligible individuals. Pennsylvania also offers a special category called Healthy Beginnings Plus, which provides psychosocial healthcare coverage in addition to traditional medical needs for pregnant women.

These programs help pregnant women access prenatal care, labor and delivery services, and postpartum care without the barrier of high medical costs. Importantly, eligibility is based on income and household size, and the requirements for pregnant women are often more flexible than for other groups.

Who Qualifies for Pregnancy Medicaid in PA?

In Pennsylvania, you may qualify for Medical Assistance for pregnant women if:

  • You are currently pregnant and live in Pennsylvania.
  • You meet the income requirements, which are higher for pregnant women than for non-pregnant adults.
  • You are a U.S. citizen or meet an eligible immigration status.

Coverage can extend for the duration of your pregnancy and up to 60 days after delivery. Babies born to mothers covered by Medicaid are automatically eligible for Medical Assistance for their first year of life.

We can help you figure out if you’re eligible if you’re not sure.

When Can I Apply?

You can apply for Medicaid at any point during your pregnancy, but the sooner, the better. Applying quickly will help you get the coverage you need for important appointments.
