How Do I Support My Friend Experiencing an Unexpected Pregnancy?

When a friend tells you she may be pregnant, how you respond can make a very real difference.

It’s natural to feel anxious or uncertain about how to approach this situation. The good news is that you’re not alone.

North Care Women’s Clinic is a trusted source for information, support, and resources and can be a helpful place to turn when your friend needs clear answers and compassionate care.

She can schedule a free and confidential appointment to speak with our staff. We can also support you as you learn how best to support her.

Start by Listening

One of the best things you can do is give your friend space to talk. She may need to process her feelings out loud, sort through her thoughts, or bounce ideas off someone she trusts. Let her express her fears, hopes, questions, and concerns without interrupting or rushing her toward a decision.

If your friend needs someone to help her think through her next steps, give her room to debate her options and say what she is really feeling. She may go back and forth. That is okay.

Let her know she has options, and remind her that she does not have to figure everything out all at once.

You do not have to have all the answers. What matters most is that she feels heard. A calm, supportive presence can help her think more clearly and feel less alone.

Sometimes the most supportive thing is simply being there.

Help in Practical Ways

If you are able, support her in practical ways, too. That might mean helping emotionally by checking in regularly, physically by going with her to an OB appointment, materially by helping with basic needs, or financially if she needs help and you can offer it.

Even small acts of support can mean a lot. Offering a ride, bringing a meal, or helping her make a list of questions to ask her healthcare provider can make a hard situation feel more manageable.

Point Her Toward Reliable Resources

Encourage your friend to get the pregnancy confirmed before doing anything else.

A pregnancy test is an important first step, but an ultrasound is also essential. An ultrasound can help confirm the pregnancy by determining whether the pregnancy is progressing, how far along your friend is, and if her pregnancy is located in the uterus. It can also provide important medical information that may affect her next steps.

Help her find reliable resources and trustworthy places to get information, such as North Care Women’s Clinic. If she needs more support, encourage her to talk with a qualified professional who can answer questions and explain her options clearly.

Just Keep Showing Up

Above all, just be there for her. Listen well, stay calm, and help where you can. Your friend may remember less about what you said than how safe and supported she felt with you beside her.

Encourage your friend to contact North Care Women’s Clinic. We are here to help in any way we can, including being there for you, too.

North Care Women’s Clinic does not provide or refer for abortions.
