Feeling anxious about giving birth is a given for almost every woman. Each time is unpredictable, even if you have had uncomplicated pregnancies and births before.
Labor and delivery are simply out of our control, and that makes the experience seem scary, but you can take steps now that will help you feel more at ease and prepared for the big day.
At North Care Women’s Clinic, we’re here to support you. Schedule a free and confidential appointment to talk with someone who cares and learn about the resources available to you.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you consider your options or prepare for birth.
First, Find a Care Team You Trust
This first step is the most essential. Your care team will be cheering you on and making medical decisions at critical points when needed.
Choose a doctor, midwife, or OB group that listens to your concerns and respects your preferences. Ask about their experience, their approach to labor support, and how they handle unexpected situations. When you trust your care team, you can feel safe knowing they’re focused on you and your baby.
You can also talk with other women who have given birth and their thoughts on their care team. Read reviews and choose a care provider, hospital system, or birthing center that accepts your insurance and has a strong reputation.
Learn About Labor and Delivery
Much of birth-related fear comes from not knowing what to expect.
Take time to learn about the stages of labor through books, educational videos from trusted medical sources, or a childbirth education class. Understanding what your body will do helps the process feel less intimidating.
You will know why you’re feeling cramps or how the uterus pushes out the baby. This will help you recognize what’s normal and what to communicate with your care team.
Prepare Physically and Mentally
Regular exercise, like walking or prenatal stretching, can build strength and endurance for labor.
Breathing techniques and relaxation practices, such as those taught in Lamaze or the Bradley Method, can help you stay calm and ease pain during labor. Some women also like mentally preparing by creating a playlist and packing familiar items for the delivery room.
Ask yourself what would make you feel better in the moment. A fan or a soft personal item, like a pillow (ideally washable), could help you feel more comfortable during contractions.
