Early Pregnancy Symptoms

If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, call us to schedule an appointment.

  • Missed period: If you have regular periods, this is the most typical symptom. Some women can still experience lighter, shorter bleeding while pregnant, but typically your menstrual period stops during the time you are pregnant.
  • Tender, swollen breasts: As early as 1-2 weeks after becoming pregnant, hormonal changes can make your breasts tender to the touch, swollen or sore. They may also feel fuller and heavier. The areola, the skin around the nipple, may darken as well.
  • Nausea: Commonly known as morning sickness, nausea (with or without vomiting) can begin as early as three weeks after conception and last for 2-8 weeks. It can sometimes last for the whole pregnancy.  Nausea can come any time of day or night and can be triggered by certain smells.
  • Increased urination: Around 6-8 weeks after conception, you may find yourself using the restroom more frequently.
  • Fatigue: As early as the first week of pregnancy, you may begin to feel tired or fatigued.  During early pregnancy, levels of the hormone progesterone soar — which can make you feel sleepy.
  • Food aversions or cravings: Some women feel cravings or aversions to certain foods, which can last for your entire pregnancy.
  • Mild Cramping: Some women may experience mild uterine cramping.
  • Mood swings: The change in hormones in your body can make you abnormally emotional.
  • Dizziness: Pregnancy can cause your blood vessels to dilate and your blood pressure to drop, causing lightheadedness.

Getting the Proper Medical Diagnosis

Many women would rather talk to a medical professional than rely on a home test.  Our team will verify if you are really pregnant and how far along you are in your pregnancy.

How does a pregnancy test work?

During early pregnancy, your body produces the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The hCG hormone enters your bloodstream and urine, which is why pregnancy can be detected through a urine or blood test.

When you have a viable pregnancy, the concentration of hCG in your body doubles every two or three days.

Home Pregnancy Tests

Many home pregnancy tests claim to be 99% accurate, and some claim to detect pregnancy one day after the first day of your missed period. But is this true?

According to the Mayo Clinic, research suggests many home pregnancy tests vary in sensitivity, meaning that the amount of hCG needed to trigger a positive result may be different from test to test.

North Care Women’s Clinic offers free lab-quality pregnancy testing and ultrasound to confirm a positive test.
